Foreign Relations

The United States must promote democracy abroad. American values are under attack by foreign enemies, and we believe the government, especially the State Department, must defend our ideals. Republicans desire an assertive Administration that does not forfeit our principles and provides  unequivocal support to Israel and our allies abroad.

Low Expectations For Obama’s Trip To Mexico And Costa Rica

Even before he travels to Mexico and Costa Rica later this week, Latin American leaders and experts are shrugging off President Obama's trip as a ‘photo op’ and social visit meant boost his fight for immigration reform at home rather than revive languishing U.S.-Latin relations. ‘I think the trip to some extent did catch by surprise many people in Central America. It was welcome news, but at the same time they sort of perceive it as a social event,’ said Manuel Orozco, a Latin America expert with the authoritative Inter-American Dialogue, said Monday.... They Said It! Former Obama National Security Adviser Sees No Progress On Middle East And Iran

- October 24, 2012

Former Obama National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones: "With The Middle East And Iran, We Are Probably Right Back Where We Were, You Know, Three Or Four Years Ago." PBS's CHARLIE ROSE: "I want to go first to General Jones then to Zbigniew Brzezinski because these are the kind of questions you had to face when you took office in 2008, give me a sense of how you looked at them and how the president looked at them and how he tried to act within the context of new ideas." GEN. JAMES JONES: "Well, the whole setup for analyzing the world that we face was based on an initial premise that we needed to take, size up the problems, talk to the people that historically were causing us difficulties and see if there was some way to proceed ahead as we now know in some cases we made some progress. I would cite the START treaty as an example of a successful couple of years of hard work with the Russians. On the other hand, with the Middle East and Iran, we are probably right back where we were, you know, three or four years ago. So it is -- it is great to be able to come in and try to think strategically but you're really many times driven by the tactics of the moment and you find yourself responding to the tactical impulses that face us and that's very hard to keep that strategic focus." ... But the latest TV images from abroad are far more ominous: mobs in the Muslim world besieging U.S. embassies, torching American flags and even burning Obama himself in effigy. The two sets of images show a gap between aspirations and reality: A president who is popular overseas has not managed to radically transform America's standing in the world through the illuminating force of his biography or personality."... In May 2008, Obama Called Iran A “Tiny” Country That Doesn't “Pose A Serious Threat To Us.” OBAMA: “Strong countries and strong Presidents talk to their adversaries. That's what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That's what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That's what Nixon did with Mao. I mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying we're going to wipe you off the planet. And ultimately that direct engagement led to a series of measures that helped prevent nuclear war, and over time allowed the kind of opening that brought down the Berlin Wall. Now, that has to be the kind of approach that we take. You know, Iran, they spend one-one hundredth of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn't stand a chance. And we should use that position of strength that we have to be bold enough to go ahead and listen. That doesn't mean we agree with them on everything. We might not compromise on any issues, but at least we should find out other areas of potential common interest, and we can reduce some of the tensions that has caused us so many problems around the world.” ...
